Dr. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl

Dr. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Schonert-Reichl has conducted research in the area of the child and adolescent social-emotional development for more than 20 years.

Dr. Schonert-Reichl received her M.A. from the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. She served as a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Postdoctoral Fellow in the Clinical Research Training Program in Adolescence at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University Medical School, Dept. of Psychiatry.

Dr. Schonert-Reichl has over 150 papers presented at scholarly national and international conferences, as well as over 40 publications in scholarly journals and books. She has also delivered presentations to dozens and dozens of non-academic audiences on the topic of the relation of social emotional development to school adjustment. She has become a sought after local television and radio guest, with numerous appearances on Breakfast Television, the Bill Good Show, CBC’s Early Edition and more.

Dr. Kim’s recent projects have included a longitudinal evaluation of the impact of the Roots of Empathy program; a collaborative evaluation of Safe Spaces, a bullying prevention program for preschool-age children; and the Middle Childhood Inside and Out study examining associations between how school-age children spend their out of school time and their social, emotional, and academic adjustment in collaboration with United Way of the Lower Mainland. For her leading edge work and excellence in teaching, she was recognized in 2007 with the prestigious Killam Teaching Prize from UBC.
